CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Lorna Dane (Polaris)
CANON: Wolverine and the X-Men
CANON REFERENCE: Here is a brief link to Lorna's wiki entry, but it's mostly comics related. And here is a link to the wiki for the TV series.
AGE: 17
GENDER: Female
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: Junior
APPEARANCE:
There isn’t much out of the ordinary when it comes to Lorna’s looks, but she is very striking. Her heritage is rather strange, seeing how she’s a Jewish Polish Romani. She is tall for her age, standing at 5’7, with a very lithe body. She has long, slender legs, a small waist, and is very endowed in the chest region. Her eyes are a vivid green, she has a sharp chin, high cheekbones, and still needs to grow into her nose. Oh, and her hair is green. It’s negligible, compared to so many other mutants.
PERSONALITY:
Lorna has been under her father’s care from the age of three, meaning she had lived in Genosha for 14 years of her life. Most of that time has been restricted to the palace, unless accompanied by an escort. With no friends other than the Master of Magnetism, the Acolytes, and perhaps an older sibling or two, she never experienced the kinds of things most children should. Come to think of it, she experienced a lot children never should.
At an early age, she was introduced to the cruelties of mankind.
She grew up on stories of the Holocaust as told by a man who lived through it. She witnessed mutants crawling onto the shores of Genosha with nothing but the clothes on their back, begging for sanctuary. Constantly, her father told her of the dreams he had for mutant kind and the true meaning of Homo sapiens superior. For as long as she can remember, Lorna has been aware of her role in the grand scheme of things. When her father’s time comes to an end, it is her duty to step into his place. That was what she has been groomed for.
The pressure of being the future ruler of Genosha does not get to her as much as the fear of mutants never being free. She views her country as a paradise, one which she wishes to share with the entire world. However, she doesn’t understand the dirty work which comes with all universal ideals. Knowing she is the furthest thing from a soldier, Magneto has done everything to protect her from that. He’s nurtured her endless compassion. They still read fairytales together. She still sleeps with a stuffed bear on a bed fit for a princess, and comes into his room when she’s had a bad dream. Though she speaks beyond her years and is very far removed from her generation, Lorna is emotionally stunted. She’s heard of the hardships of others, but her own life is charmed. She wants so much for the entirety of mutant kind and has never had to worry for her own life. She’s never fallen in love, never been seriously hurt, never done something completely crazy, and never made the big mistakes. She’s both an old soul and a child.
But she is not without her impulses. Lorna is a romantic, which is horrible considering her life and destiny. She wants to see the world. She wants to explore and feel and make mistakes and fall in love. The fact that she both shouldn’t and can’t in her father’s eyes makes her want all of it even more. Despite how shy she may appear (it really is the quiet ones you need to watch out for,) when she gets close to someone or has a strong opinion, her true colors definitely show through. The girl is very passionate and still very nurturing. She enjoys spending time on her own in the gardens, helping all of the plants grow. She doesn’t have to look for the beauty in everything because she already sees it. She visits the hospitals to read to the mutant children and is very eager to help when needed. She’s a princess of the people.
She’s also a bit of a scamp. Lorna likes knowing, and there is a lot in Genosha her father believes she’s oblivious to. For instance, the cells in the lower levels of the island? She not only knows of them, but has snuck down there to see them. Whenever one of the Acolytes tells Lorna something upsetting? Magneto punishes them, but she still wants to know more. She sneaks out of the palace to try and see every part of Genosha. With her strong opinions and curious nature, she’s probably the cause of many gray hairs on many people.
Lorna is definitely worth it, though. She’s a compassionate, loving girl with stars in her eyes, a strong will, a naïve curiosity, and a dream as big as the world.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Lorna is her father’s daughter. There’s a big reason why he keeps her so close and calls her his heir. Her mutant abilities manifested when she was 3 years old and they are an exact replica of Magneto’s. However, she is still very young an inexperienced. She will not reach her full potential for at least another decade. Though she has an abundance of passive powers, her active ones take a lot out of her. Because of her peaceful nature and her want to keep her true identity on a need to know basis, she will not be spoon bending like it’s going out of style. Also, her powers are heavily tied to her emotions. The more stress she is under, the stronger she will be.
Passive Abilities:
(She doesn’t have to think about these. Some of them happen as naturally as breathing.)
Magnetokinesis (Electromagnetic Manipulation):
• Magneto has direct control over the electromagnetic field of the earth. Which is totally hax. Having his powers, Lorna has the potential for this ability. In the future. Way in the future. As in, she may not even understand she’ll have this ability. For now, she’s just very attuned to this field and everything that disrupts it. It’s a constant hum in her mind. With sunspots, she gets migraines. She can feel earthquakes before they hit, and if they are large enough, she can feel them from halfway around the world. She can feel the pull of the tides and the magnetism in a storm. And on a much smaller scale, she can feel the hum and know the frequency of things like electromagnetic generators.
• Metallic objects may move, shift, or warp when she is upset or angry. Thankfully, she keeps her emotions under check.
Magnetic Force Fields: When in serious danger, her powers will activate and create a magnetic shield around her body.
Electromagnetic Sight: She can perceive the world around her as patterns of magnetic and electrical energy. Everything has a small magnetic field, so it helps her have a better feel of the world around her. Because of this, she can immediately tell when something metal is in the area. The larger the concentration of metal, the longer her range.
Active Abilities:
(Using a majority of these will take a lot out of her. Some may even exert her enough to knock her unconscious.)
Magnetokinesis (Electromagnetic Manipulation):
• The ability to manipulate all forms of metal along with magnetic and electrical fields. She can liquefy, mend, and reconstruct any and all things metallic. Right now, she’s definitely not as fluid with it as her father.
• She can also generate her own EMP. Definitely not on any large scale, but we might want to keep her out of the computer labs.
Magnetic Force Fields: She can consciously use this ability to put shields around herself, other people, and small groups. She can also lift and suspend people or objects in air. But this is not an easy ability for her in the least, especially with things that aren’t made of metal. These fields can also be used to absorb electrical energy, which she can then harness and throw right back. Girl needs a heck of a lot of practice with this one.
Magnetic Flight: She can fly by riding the Earth’s magnetic field. This is relatively easy for her and she will use this in game.
Magnetic Pulse: She can focus magnetic energy into concussive blasts as well as short circuit or overload electrical systems. Right now, these blasts are not very strong.
Organic Iron Manipulation: What it sounds like. She can manipulate the natural iron within a living being, which is why she takes iron supplements everyday in case of emergency. The lower the concentration of iron, the more difficult this is. This is not a power she wants to use on other people. Ever.
Special Skills:
Nothing having to do with combat, that’s for sure. Lorna can barely run a few blocks without having to stop to catch her breath. Though she’s definitely not X-Man material, she’s still handy to have around.
She speaks five languages fluently: English, Polish, German, Yiddish, and French. On top of that, her compassion makes it easy for her to help people in times of need. She knows first aid and is always ready to help. Lorna can also crochet, cook, play the harp, and she’s beaten her father at chess at least twice (though he may have let her win.)
AU HISTORY:
Lorna Dane was the only child born to an American couple, Susanna and Arnold. At least that was what Susanna convinced Arnold of for the first 3 years of Lorna’s life. Little did her husband know, Mrs. Dane once had an affair with a man named Erik Lehnsherr, otherwise known as Magneto. When Arnold, a pilot, discovered that Lorna wasn’t his, he took both his wife and daughter up in a plane to confront Susanna about it. There was so much yelling that the 3-year-old little girl became scared. All she wanted was for the fighting to stop. So it did. Through a violent manifestation of her mutant abilities, the plane was ripped to shreds and plummeted to the ground, killing both Mr. and Mrs. Dane.
Word of Susanna’s death and the daughter she left behind quickly reached Erik. Upon discovering that Lorna was not only his progeny, but had inherited all of his mutant abilities, he took full legal guardianship of her and raised her in Genosha.
To this day, she believes the plane crash and her mutant abilities had no correlation.
The only reason Lorna remembers her mother’s face is through photographs; her first memories begin in Genosha alongside her father. Her very overprotective father. Being his heir apparent, the future ruler of his country, and Magneto’s little girl, “sheltered” is an understatement. But they say little girls fall in love with their fathers. They’ve spent Hanukkah in Poland, gone skiing in the Swiss Alps, fallen asleep on the beach in Seychelles, played hide-and-seek in Madagascar, and spent many hours over a backgammon board in Genosha’s palace.
Her life has been charmed and beautiful, but only because Magneto has been protecting her from all of the dirty work. Which is not something he could carry on forever. One day or another, Lorna would have to learn about the other side of his conquest. Now was not the time. Knowing that there was much to be done, things that he did not want his daughter to witness, a decision needed to be made. Locking her alone in the palace was too dangerous an option just as keeping her by his side was no option at all. So he made one of the toughest calls of his life and put Lorna in the hands of the only person in the world he could trust with such a task:
Charles Xavier.
Nervous, excited, and somewhere near heartbroken, Lorna packed her things. She instructed a few of the Acolytes on how to take care of her garden, made her bed, and said goodbye to all of her favorite places on the island. Father and daughter shopped together in Paris and spent one final evening together in New York. She made him promise they would call, Skype, and write as much as possible. Then, not knowing when she’d see him or her home again, she got into the car that brought her to the Institute.

Note: After a long discussion between Lorna and her father, it was decided that it would be best for all if her parentage, as well as her mutant abilities, were kept on a need to know basis. Meaning only the staff of the Institute needs to know. Because of this, she will only be using her powers of flight around the other students, unless in a dire situation. As far as her classmates will know, her father is a foreign diplomat and a close family friend of Xavier's.
